Interaction - Value Network Model
The Value Network diagram on the "Interaction – Network" page shows the interactions between organizational entities within the population in a Hierarchical Edge bundling chart.
Purpose
With the information in this model, you have the outline, key-elements, for an adjacency planning. It also shows legacy waste in collaborations. Thick lines that are highly transparent show this type of waste within organizations.

The edge of the model
On the edge of the diagram, the (abbreviated) names of the entities that are included in the interview of the population are displayed. The entities are grouped together according to a common hierarchical parent.
The surface area of the model
The central surface of the chart shows the interactions between entities in different ways:
- Line color (depending on the position of the mouse cursor)
- Line thickness
- Line transparency
Each line segment represents a connection between two entities. Such a connection is called an " Interaction". Each interaction has a source and a target. The source is the entity that the respondent belongs to. The target is the entity that the correspondent chose when asked with which entities collaboration is necessary to achieve results.
The line segments are curved depending on a force setting. This force attracts interactions belonging to the same hierarchical parent.
Line thickness
Frequency of the interactions. The thickness of the line corresponds with the number of people who chose a specific interaction between two entities ( source and target). Thicker lines represent more people interacting between these two entities.
Line colors - with the cursor at rest
The color of the lines show the types of interactions between entities:
- Purple line: Mainly physical interactions
- Grey line: Mixed interactions
- Orange line: Mainly virtual interactions
Line Colors - with the cursor hovering on an entity
Hovering over an entity named in the chart will highlight the connected lines in a color that indicates the directionality between the source and target entities of the interaction: The entity label that is hovered over is also underlined.
- Green lines indicate more incoming than outgoing connections towards the entity
- Blue lines indicate equal incoming and outgoing interactions
- Red lines indicate more outgoing than incoming interactions from that entity
At the same time the labels of the entities on the edge are also highlighted:
- Red labels occur when there are more connections originating from other entities than from the one hovering on
- Blue labels occur when incoming and outgoing interactions are equal
- Green labels occur when most connections originate from within the entity hovering, either to others or themselves
The colors blend to reflect the average perception of the population. This means that
Transparency
The transparency of the line indicates the importance of that interaction. An opaque, or solid color, indicates an important connection. A more transparent (or pastel) color indicates a less important connection.
